BOSTON--Fidelity Investments is poised to undertake what may be the most time-consuming phase of its Year 2000 upgrade, the tracking down of desktop applications and files on its more than 25,000 personal computers globally. Fortunately for the mutual fund giant, it is on schedule to complete upgrading and testing its mainframe, midrange and client/server applications by the end of the year.
But the desktop applications present a difficult challenge in that, by their nature, they are distributed
