PRINCETON, New Jersey--When Merrill Lynch Asset Management announced its blockbuster $5 billion acquisition of London institutional manager Mercury Asset Management last year, the division of the giant US investment bank temporarily set aside an ambitious plan to link all of its fund operations via the Copernicus messaging middleware system from VIE Systems.

But now that the Mercury deal has closed, MLAM is re-igniting the flame underneath that effort. It is also just months away from completing
