LME shareholders voted to sell to HKEx in July 2012.

Jones is expected to take up the post on September 30, following Abbott's resignation in June. He will join the board of LME, as well as becoming co-head of global markets and a member of HKEx's Management Committee.

Prior to the LME, Jones served as the CEO of NYSE Liffe, as well as the head of global derivatives and group vice president at NYSE Euronext. Before that, he was CEO at BrokerTec and ICAP Electronic Broking.

As well as the announcement of Jones's appointment, HKEx also said that Diarmuid O'Hegarty, deputy CEO at the LME, will leave the organization following a six-month notice period.
