IEX was one of the key subjects of a recent book by author and journalist Michael Lewis, which tackled high-frequency trading.

The product, commonly used among financial services firms, allows for streaming, historical and real-tine views of data, and is capable of handling millions of queries per day.

At IEX, the platform performs real-time analytics on data as it comes in, monitoring order flow through the unique system IEX has built.

"We do feel that the kdb+ database needs to get special mention when discussing our market operations surveillance," says Robert Park, co-founder and CTO at IEX. "We were looking for a platform with the ability to read and write in real time, which kdb+ does well. We also liked its flexible query language because there is no ambiguity in sequencing. We can ask any question we like, the only limit is what we can think of to ask."
