SEC Bolsters Cyber Department with Promotion of Hetner

As the title implies, he will advise chairwoman Mary Jo White on all cybersecurity policy matters. According to a release, he will coordinate efforts across the agency to address policy, engage with external stakeholders, and enhance the SEC's processes and oversight of broad-based market risk.

"Cyber-attacks are a constant threat to our markets," said White, in a statement. "With the cyber field steadily evolving and expanding, it is imperative we continue to enhance our coordinated approach to cybersecurity policy across the SEC and engage at the highest levels with market participants and governmental bodies concerning the latest developments in this area."

Hetner joined the SEC in January 2015 and is the current cybersecurity lead for the technology control program within the SEC's Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations (OCIE).

Prior to joining the SEC, he served stints at Ernst and Young (November 2012-January 2015) and was GE Capital's chief information security officer from July 2008 to October 2012. He also worked in Citigroup's Institutional Client Group, prior.
