2013 in Perspective: The Webcasts
Tackling a wide range of subjects, such as mobility, regulation, complex events processing, mobility, analytics, risk management, data governance and more, our webcasts have run the gamut of conversant topics this year. They're archived at the links below.
Navigating Regulatory Reform after the Financial Crisis
April
We gathered a panel of experts to discuss the increasingly complex regulatory reforms that capital markets participants are faced with at present. Topics included the extraterritorial reach of Dodd-Frank, derivatives reform, capital adequacy requirements and other pertinent areas. Moderated by James Rundle. A write up can be found here.
Mobile Strategies for Financial Services Firms
April
Featuring a number of speakers from the buy side, this webcast tackled the thorny issues surrounding the roll out of mobility strategies in trading firms. Topics covered included how to facilitate mobility without over-complicating the software estate, how to handle security concerns, and the future role of mobile strategies. Moderated by James Rundle. A write up can be found here.
Strategies and Practices for the New Derivatives Market
May
Few topics are as challenging or complex as derivatives reform at present, with multiple regulatory jurisdictions each pursuing their own flavor of policies, loosely bound by G20 mandates. In this webcast, moderated by Jake Thomases, panelists discussed the best ways to go about making the most of the environment.
In the first of a two-part webcast, Waters' US editor Anthony Malakian explores the use of CEP at the heart of the enterprise. Among numerous discussion points, highlights include using CEP to facilitate software agility within firms, as well as the technology's move outside of its traditional homeland in algorithmic trading, and into other areas.
CEP Comes of Age: Part Two
June
The concluding instalment of this CEP-focused series focuses on the technology's applications when it comes to real-time risk management. Specifically, it looks at how complex data can be crunched quickly in order to facilitate pre-trade risk checks, as well as CEP's applications when it comes to exchange-level controls, such as kill switches. Moderated by Anthony Malakian.
Deploying Professional-Grade Mobile Technology
June
Following on from our previous, high-level webcast on implementing mobile strategies, this webcast focused on the specifics of actually putting the technology to enable them in place. Discussion points included the use of tablets, and support for multiple operating systems, as well as competent mobile device management software and practical security issues. Moderated by James Rundle. An accompanying video whitepaper can be found here.
When it comes to any trading operation, there are few functions as important as risk. With vast calculations now required at ever-more complex rates and increasing speeds, topics discussed included how to put real time at the heart of risk management, and the types of risk suitable for this. Moderated by Victor Anderson. A write up can be found here.
Analytics: Tools and Technologies
August
A firm may have the most advanced risk engine in the world, or the best data-procesing platform, but without an analytics layer it's impossible to derive true value. Topics in this webcast included the traditional and current uses of analytics, where to deploy them, and how to avoid analysis paralysis in firms, instead, using the technology to its full potential. Moderated by James Rundle. A write up can be found here.
Data Governance: Where Culture and Technology Intersect
November
Data governance is rapidly becoming one of the most pressing concerns for buy-side firms, who are increasingly being forced to look at their data channels and lineage for regulatory reasons. This webcast focuses on the cultural obstacles at a business for effective data governance, and practical steps forward. Moderated by Victor Anderson. A write up can be found here.
Platforms and Analytics for Big Data
November
The field of big data is, unsurprisingly, big. With this webcast, Waters gathered a panel of experts to decouple the issues from the jargon, looking specifically at the business benefits of implementing big-data analytics, utilizing cloud and newer technologies, and keeping cost down. Moderated by Victor Anderson.
Global OTC Reform: Where next after the US?
December
With the somewhat painful birth of swap execution facilities (SEFs) in the US, Waters took a long, detailed look at how derivatives reform will pan out in a global sense. Topics covered included the current state of European reforms, and whether or not electronic execution of swaps will become prevalent in Asia-Pacific. Moderated by James Rundle.
Waters' sister publications, Inside Market Data and Inside Reference Data, have also run a series of webcasts and reports this year, moderated and authored by their teams of award-winning senior journalists.
