While firms need to pursue innovation, they should prioritize devoting resources to meet client demand rather than developing "fancy" technology, said Frank Birkner, chief information officer at Barclays' Barclaycard credit card division. In addition, when tackling innovation challenges, not only must firms make a priority of taking clients from "point A to point B" as fast and cheaply as possible; they must also always be mindful of costs, said Laura Ahto, chief operations officer at BNY Mellon
