Exchanges Face MiFID Battle

Anthony Kirby, head of regulation and compliance for banking and insurance at Accenture, said that in the US market, competition between exchanges and ECNs has been rife over the past 10 years, resulting in a 24 percent drop in commissions and a 40 percent narrowing of spreads. This reduction in transaction costs has been accompanied by an eight-fold rise in the number of equity trades and a fifty-fold rise in data volumes, Kirby said.
