That's because it's far trickier to build trading platforms for unique and complex instruments than it is for equities or foreign exchange. But once they're built, derivatives platforms are far more flexible; it's much easier to add simple underlying instruments to a derivatives trading system than it is to add derivatives to an equities trading system..
