Registration and direct regulation of market data vendors by the Securities and Exchange Commission is an idea whose time may be coming. In the wake of the October 19th market break, the SEC is feeling pressure to exercise greater oversight in the realm of systems capacity, says a senior Commission staffer, and one result may be a more hands-on approach to quote vendor regulation.

This unsettling view of the future was presented to the April 18th New York meeting of the Information Industry
