Steve Sparkes, who left CS First Boston in Tokyo several years ago to join the firm's New York IT organisation, has been named global head of bond trading technology at First Boston. Sparkes was promoted to the job after it was vacated by Chip Steinmetz. Steinmetz left to join Union Bank of Switzerland.

Nomura Securities, Bear Stearns and PaineWebber in New York have all recently sent programming staff to a week-long training course in Java last month. The course is conducted by Fusion Systems
