Most pundits think the market data industry will have a tough 2002 because of user downsizing. But vendors have more to worry about than fewer desks for their terminals.

We hear that some market data customers are playing ultra hardball with the vendors. Larger customers are looking to do global deals where they can use size to squeeze the vendors. They want to keep their 2002 spend at the 2001 level or even lower. (Emphasis on lower, says one vendor.)

Not only that, but customers are demanding
