NEW YORK—If your exchange was not approached for a merger during 2006, hang your head in shame. Consolidation was all the rage in 2006, but only the most popular exchanges on the playground were tapped for takeovers.

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) has been playing hard to get all year, with the Nasdaq Stock Market acting as its unsuccessful suitor.
