Analysts: BlackBerry Shutdown Unlikely

NEW YORK—Despite the protracted legal wrangling between NTP Inc. and Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) over patent issues related to the popular BlackBerry service, analysts are skeptical that the omnipresent "CrackBerrys" will actually go dark.

"It really is not in either firm's interest to have a BlackBerry shut down," says Harrell Smith, an analyst with Celent. "All that's going to do is eliminate a potential source of revenue."

The conflict dates back to 2001, when NTP sued RIM for patent
