Connectivity Issues Halt Johannesburg Trading

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) halted trading today due to connection issues with its hosted platform in London.

The JSE is in the process of upgrading its engine from the London Stock Exchange's TradElect system to the Millennium platform. The migration is expected to be completed in July. The system will be deployed locally in South Africa rather than the UK to avoid similar problems in the future, which reportedly originated in Johannesburg's telecommunications network.

"The JSE has advised clients that it paused the equity market at 10:39 a.m. today due to issues with the international links between the exchange and London, where its trading engine is located," the exchange said in a prepared statement. Trading activity had resumed by this afternoon.
