Is cloud computing just a small outgrowth of software as a service (SaaS)?

Croucher: It's an evolution of it. SaaS was originally focused on specific applications and was closely related to application service providers (ASPs). However, the development of SaaS in the ASP model has been restricted by legacy software licensing models. Successful cloud computing environments leverage open-source software specifically developed without the constraints of legacy licensing agreements.
