2010 Year in Review: Herd in Review

January: Larry Joyce joined Thomson Reuters as sales specialist for its Lipper funds databases, after AOL disbanded news aggregator Relegence Latency monitoring software vendor SeaNet Technologies promoted Raymond Marra to president and chief executive, replacing founder Bernie Davidovics, who remains chief technology officer.

February: Barclays Capital data executives Mary Langevin, Tere Duff and Bill Mangan all moved to pastures new, with Langevin and Duff taking roles at Nomura and Mangan joining Macquarie Holdings. Thomson Reuters appointed Mike Bergmeijer global head of news strategy for its Investment and Advisory business.

March: Miriam Soza became head of global market data services at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, replacing Vincent Patrizio, who left to join ADP. Hirander Misra left Chi-X Europe to become CEO of low-latency infrastructure vendor Algo Technologies. Thomson Reuters moved Investment and Advisory head Eric Frank to Hong Kong, reflecting Asia’s contribution to I&A revenues. Ben Fortunato rejoined Tradeweb as global head of market data after a stint at BondDesk’s TIPS and TechHackers unit, replacing Bill Gartland.

April: RBS Securities hired Clifford Perry as head of Americas business information services. A shake-up at Netik saw Rob Flatley—previously head of Deutsche Bank’s Autobahn Equity trading platform—replace John Wise as CEO. Paul Starkey left Indxis to co-found an indexes startup, Global Index Group. Claus Thorball left Saxo Bank to join Nordea as global head of market data, while Thomson Reuters’ Enterprise division hired David Kelly of SAC Capital as CTO, Tanya Ezekiel from Bank of America as global head of business operations, and former Merrill Lynch exec Roseann Palmieri as global head of enterprise content.

May: CMA hired Antoine Kohler—head of information services at Icap—as CEO, replacing Laurent Paulhac, MD of OTC products and services at parent CME Group. Algo news startup Selerity hired Thomson Financial sales vet Jeffrey Otten as vice president of global sales. Data consultancy Jordan & Jordan bolstered its UK operations, moving Tim Glenister and Neil Geddes from New York to London, while Nasdaq OMX also set up a direct sales team in London, moving John Willock from Helsinki and Jack Hamilton from New York. FTSE hired former State Street data exec John White as MD of its new Content Services group.

June: Colin Jowers joined Royal Bank of Scotland as COO for fixed income and strategy research after more than 20 years at Dresdner Kleinwort. Following its acquisition by Sybase, former Aleri sales exec Frank Sieracki joined Netik as MD of North American sales, while former CEO Don DeLoach joined database provider Infobright. FactSet hired Anne Shapiro, former sales manager at Tenfore and Morningstar, as product strategist in its new Content and Technology Solutions group. Tick database and CEP vendor OneMarketData hired Louis Lovas as director of solutions, having spent 15 years at Progress Software and its Apama division. Ron Jordan left his role as executive vice president of market data at NYSE Euronext. Markit hired Gianluca Biagini, former global head of data solutions sales at Bloomberg as managing director of sales.

July: Ian Blance, former Interactive Data veteran and VP of strategic sales at OTC Valuations, joined SIX Telekurs as head of business development for evaluated pricing. Market data management software vendor MDSL hired former head of HSBC’s data team, Paule Landi, as senior consultant. Luca Filippa left the London Stock Exchange, where he was head of markets analysis, to join FTSE as MD for Italy. Rafah Hanna, former head of MTS Data, joined NYSE Euronext as global head of data licensing.

August: John Hamlen quit industry association Ipug to form a rival body called FINet. Kevin Formby, formerly head of business development at BT Global Financial Services, joined network monitoring vendor Endace as VP of business development for financial services, while Richard Man rejoined BT in Formby’s role, after a year at subsidiary Ribbit. Former International Index Co CEO David Mark joined MSCI as executive director. Tullett Prebon Information hired MarketAxess’ Chris McGuigan as head of the Americas, replacing Mike Kirby, who moved to Icap.

September: Russ Goring, former head of market data at Barclays Capital, moved to JP Morgan. Interactive Data named Mason Slaine chairman, president and chief executive, moving Ray D’Arcy to vice-chairman, and followed by hiring former co-CEO of Instinet Alex Goor as CIO.

October: Aske Wind Hansen moved from Saxo Bank to Nordea as market data manager. Data industry veteran Doug Jeffrey joined Information Mosaic as president of the Americas, from Netik, where he was EVP. Tinku Gupta was named head of market data and access at the Singapore Exchange, replacing Lai Kok Leong, who moved to another part of the exchange. Dennis Mwansa moved from the Royal Bank of Scotland in Japan to Mizuho Securities, as senior infrastructure manager. Numerix hired industry veteran John Peck as head of sales for EMEA. Marc Carletti—former CEO of SIX Telekurs and MD of Reuters France—joined BT as head of global banking.

November: Standard & Poor’s Capital IQ division hired former head of Thomson Reuters’ commercial operations Ted Vivian as head of client development for EMEA, while mobile data vendor CarryQuote appointed former Thomson Reuters UK and Ireland sales head Christian Erlandson as global head of sales. Not to be outdone, Thomson Reuters hired Tim Baker from Integrity Research Associates as global head of content strategy for Investment & Advisory, Ted Sutton from West Highland Support Services as head of delivery for its Solutions team, NYSE Technologies’ Rob Wallos as global technology manager for Focus Group Accounts, and industry veteran Sally Hinds from Credit Suisse as global head of Enterprise Data Management. David Hann departed Activ Financial, where he was EMEA MD, to join Dubai-based vendor DirectFN.

December: Technology veteran Jim Leman joined Titan Trading Analytics’ board of directors. Thomson Reuters hired former DTCC MD Rob Hegarty as global head of market structure for its Enterprise business, while the vendor’s former head of transaction analytics, David Shapiro, returned to Transaction Auditing Group as EVP of sales and business development.
