German financial news provider DPA-AFX is planning to target its economic and financial video content at financial institutions as an additional input to investment decisions, after launching an English-language video news service this week.

DPA-AFX has produced German-language video content for the past five years, but took the decision to create English-language content in order to further internationalize its offering, following the launch of English-language versions of its International ProFeed and Compact real- and near-time financial newswires in 2011 (IMD, April 11, 2011).

The video content is currently available on third-party financial websites and news portals -- such as the website of German newspaper Handelsblatt -- but the news provider is considering adapting the service so it can be integrated into financial data terminals after being approached by an unnamed bank earlier this year, says Martin Kalverkamp, managing director at DPA-AFX.

"We don't currently sell the German-language content to financial professionals, but we are having conversations with a large bank to deliver this content in English into a terminal platform so that a closed user group within that bank can access it," Kalverkamp says.

The English news video content focuses on financial markets in Europe, and comprises two reports each trading day covering four topics: "Stock of the Day," which focuses on one stock and provides information on its latest movements; "Europe in a Minute," which details the major news of the day; "European Markets Overview," which covers the main market movers in equities, currencies, commodities and interest rates; and "Top Headline," which delivers a snapshot view of news.

Kalverkamp says the Flash-based video content -- which can also be integrated into third-party apps for iPhones and other smartphones -- was created in response to customer demand, after clients responded positively to alternative distribution methods such as audio and podcasts. "Of course, if you read text and articles you can get a lot of information, but [video]... is easier to consume, is available on-demand, and gives a multimedia extension to financial news," he adds.
