Risking It
Over the past couple of years, we've covered a wide range of different types of financial data management projects in Inside Reference Data, and the one recurring theme has been risk mitigation. It is rare to see a data management initiative that is not somehow linked to risk management.
Whether it is about aggregating data from different systems, taking additional sources of data, or investing in software to automate processes, it all relates to how the data management team can help the business mitigate risk.
Following the financial crisis, data managers have reported that they have been working more and more closely with the risk management groups. At one point, some market participants even debated the possibility of merging data management and risk management units, and others decided to appoint datafocused risk management officers.
With pressure from regulators to introduce robust operational processes and control mechanisms, most firms are tuned in to the importance of data management. The challenge now is to stay informed about lessons learned and strategies that prove to be successful. In this Managing Risk special report, which includes comments from industry experts and a news review, we hope to provide readers with insight into the latest market developments.
