Esma Examines HFT, CSDs in Risk Report

Esma is the European Union agency responsible for overall market supervision.

In the report, Esma conducted a study of 100 actively-traded stocks in nine European countries as a means to determine the influence of HFT in European equities. Finding that HFT activity is concentrated in multilateral trading facilities, Esma says its study suggests that the practice is responsible for around 60 percent of orders, and 22 percent of value traded, with a number of peak periods such as US government data releases and market opens.
