In 1910, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and British naval officer Robert Falcon Scott set sail on rival expeditions to be the first to reach the South Pole. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen and his team successfully reached their destination and he safely led his team back to their ship. Scott and his team reached the Pole on January 17, 1912. Tragically, Scott’s team did not live to tell their tale—they froze to death on their journey back.
