Supreme Court Copyright Ruling Could Mean Trouble For Exchanges, Data Vendors


A March 27 ruling by the Supreme Court reduces the breadth and depth of U.S. Copyright Act protection available to compilers and distributors of factual data.

The decision concerns market data providers and distributors insofar as it eliminates some arguments for copyright protection. At the same time, it appears to limit the exposure of market data users and financial database developers to prosecution for copyright infringement.
