Reuters' Contract Talks With Newspaper Guild Deadlocked Over Benefits, Pay Hikes

After seven months of talks, the Reuters Information Services Inc. local of the Newspaper Guild isn't even close to a new labor contract with management. At issue are medical and maternity benefits and pay scales. Reuters Holdings PLC earned $291.6 million after tax last year, a 35 percent increase over 1988. But Reuters has never broken out profit figures for its North American operations.
