The acquisition of financial industry operations software provider Sybase by German software company SAP, the third-largest software firm globally, passed muster with clients, as the company won the best complex-event processing (CEP) solution category—in addition to its win in the enterprise data management system category—in this year’s Waters Rankings. At the time of the acquisition in May this year, SAP and Sybase officials said the deal would allow both companies to leverage SAP’s in-memory technology offering as well as Sybase’s CEP and analytic processing capabilities. Industry observers predicted that the SAP acquisition would allow it to leverage the Aleri CEP platform that Sybase had in turn acquired earlier in 2010 across more applications as the two firms continue their integration drive. Additionally, in April, Sybase agreed to use a data visualization platform from Panopticon Software for real-time data visualization within its Aleri platform.
