Buy-Side Technology Awards 2025 winner’s interview: Morningstar Sustainalytics

Morningstar Sustainalytics won Best ESG data provider in this year’s Buy-Side Technology Awards. Ron Bundy, president, and David Pagliaro, chief strategy and product officer of Morningstar Sustainalytics, discuss the factors contributing to the firm’s recent win.  

• Ron Bundy: You have been instrumental in growing Sustainalytics as a business since you took over its leadership in 2023. What have been the highlights for you these past three years?
• David Pagliaro: Sustainalytics is by no means the only provider of ESG-related data and ancillary content across the industry. What do you see as your key differentiators, and what does Sustainalytics do better than other providers serving the environmental, social and governance (ESG) market?
• Ron Bundy: From a buy-side perspective, what are firms struggling with right now on the ESG front and how is Sustainalytics as a business and partner helping them address those challenges?
• David Pagliaro: You have been at Sustainalytics for the best part of a year now and will assume leadership of the business from early 2026. What will be your immediate objectives as president of Sustainalytics, or will it be a case of “more of the same” in the short term?
