"There are two arguments [for co-locating]," said Roji Oommen, director of financial services at Savvis. "There is the obvious latency one... the other is slightly more subtle, and is about the cost-saving aspect of moving [systems] outside your datacenter," he said.

But while co-location yields obvious benefits, the emergence of multilateral trading facilities in Europe has made co-location strategies increasingly complex, as liquidity is now dispersed across multiple sites.
