Sommers started her career as a senatorial intern.

Sommers, a Republican, was sworn in on August 8, 2007, before being nominated for a five-year term by President Barack Obama on July 20 2009. No replacement has been named, and no announcement on whether Sommers would be moving back to the private sector was made.
