The Valetta-based Malta Stock Exchange will use Deutsche Börse's Xetra platform from 2012.

The Malta Stock Exchange (MSE) has announced an agreement with Deutsche Börse to use the German exchange operator’s Xetra platform.

The deal, which was signed on Oct. 24 and will run for five years, will put Deutsche Börse's system in charge of organizing listed equities on the MSE. The electronic trading system is expected to go live next year.

"We are looking forward to becoming a participant exchange on the Xetra platform in mid-2012, which we believe will open up new opportunities for international expansion not only for the exchange itself but also for its members, issuers and investors in line with the MSE's on-going strategy," says Eileen Muscat, CEO at the MSE.

Other venues using the Xetra platform include the Vienna Stock Exchange, Irish Stock Exchange, the Bulgarian Stock Exchange, the Ljubljana Stock Exchange, Eurex Bonds and the European Energy Exchange.
