Product overview—The ANNA Service Bureau

The Association of National Numbering Agencies (ANNA) is the global association of national numbering agencies that promotes data standardization for financial instruments. ANNA upholds International Organization for Standardization (ISO) principles and serves markets through work to evolve an identifier system that underpins transparency and efficiency. The ANNA Service Bureau (ASB) is the organization’s central data hub, which collects and enriches financial and referential identification data, making it available to ANNA members, authorities and market participants.

The ASB stands at the forefront of this evolution and, whether it is in response to regulation or the emergence of new, innovative assets requiring clear guidelines for allocation, the ASB is dedicated to the development of standards that support financial markets worldwide.

Secret sauce

ANNA collaborates with authorities, industry stakeholders and standards bodies to provide financial instrument identifier codes and solutions that best serve the industry’s needs. The ASB offers the most complete and directly sourced compilation of International Securities Identification Numbers (ISINs) and reference data worldwide. It covers 200 jurisdictions and currently provides single-point access to more than 122 million ISIN records. ASB data helps organizations meet their regulatory requirements and assists authorities with their supervisory functions.

Recent milestones

Over the past year, the ASB has continued to collect and consolidate a growing body of standard identifier data, alongside initiating developments to include new key data elements such as detailed instrument description data and other identifier codes. New application programming interface access has enabled automated and streamlined access to the ASB, with use-cases and membership continuing to expand. ANNA now regularly provides ISO standard identifiers for digital assets based on open data principles, the XT ISIN.

Future objectives

Over the next 12 months, ANNA plans to expand its number of contributing jurisdictions responsible for ISIN records and associated reference data. The aim is to increase coverage, build an interoperable standards ecosystem and provide access to a variety of datasets via subscription services. Current ASB supported standards include ISIN, FISN, CFI, LEI and MIC. ANNA is planning to further develop standards for the growing landscape of digital asset instruments, with DTI to follow.

ANNA follows up its win in the Best reference data provider category of the 2024 WatersTechnology Rankings by winning the corresponding category of this year’s Inside Market Data & Inside Reference Data Awards thanks to its impressive ANNA Service Bureau. The ASB is a centralized data hub that collects and enriches global securities identification data—primarily, although not exclusively, ISINs—and makes that data available to other national numbering agency members and its clients. That might not sound like an especially important undertaking, but nothing could be further from the truth. ANNA’s various activities, covering 200 jurisdictions and providing access to 122 million+ ISIN records, help improve market transparency and detect systemic risk across the industry. It is a vital role, if ever there was one, and the primary reason why ANNA is the perfect recipient of this year’s award.
