Platts Buys Shipping Data Partner Commodity Flow

Before acquiring Commodity Flow, Platts distributed the vendor's data as part of its cFlow product.

Founded in 2009, Commodity Flow provides commodity, energy trading and shipping customers with visualization tools that use proprietary functionality to enable users to identify new opportunities and make better-informed trading decisions in waterborne commodities. This includes the ability to monitor changes in trade flows through vessel diversions, as well as intelligence to ascertain whether a tanker is full or empty and what it is carrying.

The purchase helps extend Platts' trade flow analytical capabilities, and complements Platts' existing shipping services, including the recent acquisition of shipping and oil news and analysis vendor Petromedia in July (IMD, July 20, 2015).

Platts and Commodity Flow have been technology partners since 2011, with Platts acting as the exclusive distributor of Commodity Flow's content within its Platts cFlow product suite.

"The value of cFlow has evolved through successful collaboration by both companies. With Commodities Flow now a part of Platts, we will accelerate this innovation by adding in proprietary datasets tailored to provide customers with ever more relevant information about energy and commodity trade flows," says Platts president Imogen Dillon Hatcher in a statement.
