Programming languages tend to be like car manufacturers: everyone has a preference and they all come with pros and cons.
Just as the case with cars, there are trends in every industry. In financial services, Python has certainly made a case for being the scripting language of choice at the moment. However, R was the topic of conversation amongst some panelists at the Risk/Waters Chicago Trading and Technology Summit 2015.
