If you drive east, up into the mountains, from the coast of the Adriatic, sooner or later you'll come across the name "TITO" imprinted in stone against the green. Tito was responsible for moulding what used to be Yugoslavia into a manageable, if repressive, entity. Throughout his long tenure -- as dictator -- he somehow kept the evidently boiling passions of the various peoples of Yugoslavia's member states under control. When he died, all hell broke loose, and the region has yet to recover.
