Tito was responsible for moulding what used to be Yugoslavia into a manageable, if repressive, entity. Throughout his long tenure -- as dictator -- he somehow kept the evidently boiling passions of the various peoples of Yugoslavia's member states under control. When he died, all hell broke loose, and the region has yet to recover.
