PaineWebber To Distribute Quotron Data Via Own Network; Independence Is Goal

With prototypes humming in its labs and a pilot scheduled for next month, PaineWebber Inc. has selected its next broker platform: 486-based IBM hardware, AT&T's network and market data and services from Quotron, which the firm now characterizes as its "software vendor."

By its executives' reckoning, the new configuration will cost the firm more than the $17 million or so that sources say it's currently paying yearly. But they expect it will offer PaineWebber's 5,001 brokers more powerful tools
