SWITCH FAILURE HALTS NYSE, REGIONAL TRADING
A communications switch failure last Monday caused trading on the New York Stock Exchange to halt for 59 minutes. The malfunctioning switch prevented traders from receiving current prices and executing orders for 2,500 of the 3,090 stocks listed. The exchange halted trading in all stocks at 1:16 p.m. to isolate the problem and resumed trading at 2:15 p.m. after the switch was taken out of service and technicians checked systems.
