Michael Shashoua: The Rise of Index Fund Data

Growth in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) is creating challenges for those calculating the indexes on which these funds are based and those handling the ETFs themselves. Alternative-weighted indexes showed dramatic growth in 2011, with volatility becoming a category leader for new asset growth, says Arun Singhal, senior product manager of indexes at Russell Investments. Alternative-weighted indexes were developed in 2003, first with equal weight indexes and later as dividend-weighted indexes.
