Constructing a new datacenter from scratch is not for the faint of wallet. Just ask consumer technology giant Apple, which, in announcing a new datacenter facility in North Carolina during 2009, stated that it planned to spend $1 billion on the project over the course of nine years. By late 2010, $750 million of that had already left the coffers, an enormous chunk of which was the purchase of the real estate.
