Rathbones Confirms Merger Talks with Smith & Williamson

Combination could create £50 billion-plus investment manager

The talks follow increased mergers and acquisitions activity among UK buy-side firms.

Rathbone Brothers and Smith & Williamson are exploring the possibility of a merger, which could create an investment manager with over £50 billion (approximately $64.5 billion) in assets under management.

Rathbones confirmed that discussions were underway between the two firms via the Regulatory News Service on August 21, but cautioned against assuming that any deal was certain to close.
