As the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) incorporates more electronic trading, there is a major, potential benefit of greater automation that appears to have gotten lost in the shuffle. As others have noted, the virtual, remote nature of truly electronic trading can be quite useful for disaster recovery and business continuity planning (DR/BCP) purposes.

This is not to say that the NYSE has inadequate DR/BCP strategies. It’s just that the virtual nature of electronic trading makes it a moving target
