While the rest of the world is winding down for the holidays, there is still a flurry of activity in the realm of financial technology.

For starters, the Bond Market Association (BMA) last week released its 2004 e-commerce survey, finding that in the U.S. and Europe there are 74 electronic trading systems for fixed-income securities--46 in the U.S. and 28 in Europe. Twenty-five of the current platforms can be used for executing online transactions in derivatives, up from 13 in 2003.

The BMA also
