Over the course of a weekend last month, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac fell under the weight of bad loans and risk exposure and the US government had to step in to keep these vital institutions up and running. The following Monday, the London Stock Exchange went dark for most of the day and members lost out on the chance to trade on what could have been the busiest trading session of the year. One week
