After the October 1987 stock market crash, the construction of new trading rooms by banks and brokerage firms nearly came to a halt in North America and Europe. But there was a bright spot as oil companies built new facilities for trading energy products.

Last fall, Exxon went live with a new trading room in Florham Park, N.J. Exxon officials declined to be interviewed about the new facility and would not even disclose the number of positions in the room.
