Peel back the covers on many financial firms and you will find an internal structure that is both fragmented and dysfunctional. Vertical silos grate uneasily against one another and there is very little by way of mutual data sharing.

At its heart, enterprise data management has always been about the transformation of this disorder; by molding data into a horizontal commodity rather than a vertical one, the barriers between silos can be dissolved … or so the theory goes.
