Keeping mum

When US senator John McCain announced his running mate for this November's presidential election, no one saw Sarah Palin coming. There had been a lot of speculation about various old white guys but no one expected McCain's running mate to be the governor of Alaska, an attractive 44 year-old hockey mum and mother of five, who, in her own words, differs from a pit bull only by virtue of her lipstick.

The campaign, according to press reports, made sure no one knew Palin was being vetted for the vice
