Thomson To Create Broker/Dealer Unit, Collect Soft Dollars

To keep tighter control over the pricing and distribution of its products, Thomson Financial Networks plans to set up a broker/dealer subsidiary by July. As a member of the National Association of Securities Dealers, Thomson will be able to distribute its services directly to end-users for "soft dollars" as well as for cash, as it does now. The company may in some cases be able to charge users less than they currently pay third- party brokers, which distribute Thomson products for soft dollars.
