PaineWebber Comes Off Fence, Picking Sun Over IBM

PaineWebber Inc. is near resolving the issue of whether Sun Microsystems Inc. SPARCstations or IBM RS/6000 RISC-based UNIX processors will support fixed-income traders at its New York trading room -- and it looks like Sun will get the nod. By so doing, PaineWebber has finally settled the question of what will be its trading room hardware platform of the future.
According to chief information officer Robert McKinney, the firm has about 100 workstations rolled out, including about 80 SPARCstations
