The past five years have seen the FIX (Financial Information Exchange) protocol become a part of everyday life for electronic sell-side to buy-side communications, and has seen the creation of a whole industry segment of FIX engine vendors, including New York-based Nyfix's Javelin Technologies, Sybase's Financial Fusion and upstart Cameron Systems.

US and EU FIX committees were set up in 1993 and 1996 respectively, but only in 1999 was development of the protocol co-ordinated under the worldwide
