Afshar told attendees to ensure their firms take a measured approach to investing in data science projects, and are "laser-focused" on business problems they want to solve, rather than diving in gung-ho. Otherwise, "you very much risk exhausting the senior sponsorship that led to that initial investment."

Senior figures are often enthusiastic about data science and new datasets they believe may contain hidden value. "They'll say ‘This data science is the next big thing. Why aren't we using it?'
