NAFIS 2016: CDOs Still Struggle for Board Understanding

Chief data officers are now widely accepted in finance and other industries, but CDOs themselves still face the challenge of defining, communicating and enforcing their duties.

Many board level executives realize their firm should have a CDO, even if they don't entirely understand why, or what a CDO's remit encompasses.

"The first question to ask when you're hiring a CDO is why, after ten years of not having a CDO, are you doing it now? Often the answer is because all the competition have one and they think should too. Firms are doing it because they feel compelled to but they don't really know why," said David Gleason, chief data officer and firm-wide head of data
