"It's just another ID in a database!"

Market participants, especially in European fixed income and equities markets, are familiar with the International Securities Identification Number (ISIN) as one of many pieces of reference data they work with every day.

And many—like the one quoted above (a former fixed-income analyst at Tier 1 banks and now a derivatives trader)—react with bemusement when confronted by the esoteric and political issues behind this alphanumeric code.
