This time last year, most of the seven national retail brokerage firms were facing major conversions of their market data platforms. Since then, ADP and ILX, which split all the new upgrade business between them, have been scrambling to install PC-based market data on some 18,000 national retail brokers' desks.

Three of the five -- Kidder Peabody & Co., Smith Barney, Harris Upham & Co. and Dean Witter Reynolds Inc. -- swung to new vendors for their new systems. All three have already converted
